GP Prescribing Mounjaro Posted or Updated on 23 Jun 2025

You may have heard on the media or seen in newspapers that weight loss injections can be prescribed by your GP from June 2025.

Whilst this is true, the criteria to qualify is very strict.

There will roughly be about 220,000 patients in the UK who will qualify. This means statistically, from approximately 20,000 patients registered at Ling House Medical Centre, only around 60 will qualify.

In order to qualify, your BMI needs to be 40 or more (you will need your weight and height to find out your BMI). Plus, if your BMI is above 40 you must also have been previously diagnosed with four of the following five criteria:-

1. Diagnosed with hypertension

2.Diagnosed with sleep apnoea

3.Diagnosed with type 2 diabetes

4.Diagnosed with cardiovascular disease

5.Diagnosed with hypercholesterolemia

If you do not have a BMI above 40 and four of the conditions above your GP will not be able to prescribe you Mounjaro for weight loss based on the current guidance.
